Ireland and America:

A visit to the Irish Heritage both here and abroad

September, 2005 through May, 2006

This lecture series will be held in the Irish Cultural Society of Scranton on Sunday afternoons from 2Pm to 5Pm with good-will donations accepted at the door unless otherwise stated.

September 18th, 2005, Halfway to St. Patty’s Day - Scheduled for 11 AM to 9PM. This event will include a number of bands to play for 1 to 2 hours with ceili dance, irish instrument lessons in between these sessions. Along with the bands there will be craft demonstrations to be taught in the President’s room of the ICS building. Food will be available as well. The admission price (at the door) will be $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students/seniors. Advance tickets will be sold for $8.00 for adults.

October 16th, 2005, Mud Run Disaster - Maria Montoro, Ph.D. presents information regarding one of the largest disasters in this area concerning Irish immigrants and their families. Additional display will be shown in the President’s room with light finger foods as well.

November 13th, 2005, Find your own roots - Heather Tomlinson will present a beginner’s course on the methods to finding your family history and documenting the same. After finding the history of at least three families within her own family tree, this will be a very interesting and informative lecture with additional displays being shown in the President’s room. Again, light finger foods will be served as well.

December 4th, 2005 , Irish Christmas Craft Show - Scheduled for 12PM to 7PM, this will be the best way to get that special present for the person who has everything. There will be a nominal admission fee of $5.00 per person with many raffles and demonstrations being held in the President’s room throughout the day.

January, 15th, 2006, Traditional Irish Foods - Tentatively scheduled with Joe Caputo reprising his wonderful lecture held on December 5th of 2004. Showing how to make many traditional Irish dishes with a sampling of each after the making, he presents a very lively demonstration while filling you with history as well. Admission for this event will be $10.00 advance sales and $15.00 at the door. Limited seating will be available at the door.

February 19th, 2006, The Molly Maguires - This lecture will be presented in two stages. The first will be the viewing of a film called The Molly Maguires. Then the second portion of this lecture will be a question and answer period. Displays will be presented in the President’s room.

March 19th, 2006, Irish Film Festival - Scheduled from 1PM to 7PM, showing three different categories of films with each being shown in different rooms to accommodate children, adults and those interested in short films. The short films will be supplied by the Cork Film College. Actual films to be viewed will be announced at a later date.

April 9th, 2006, Pictorial History of Tri-county - Trying to present the history of this area, we will be putting together pictures of then and now. “Then” pictures will be displayed by individuals or groups, with the ICS taking “now” pictures and displaying them with the other pictures. Entries will be accepted at any time. This will be a revolving door type of event with the doors opening at 1PM and closing at 8PM.

May 14th, 2006, Women in Ireland - A lecture depicting the lives of women in Ireland. Many aspects of the women’s life from the past and even to now will be discussed. Additional displays will show the reality of life through pictures and possible three dimensional entries, such as clothing, tools used by women, etc.
